COFFEE BEANS & BEINGS / A BIT OF PARIS

Inside Cafe Madeleine, San Diego
IN SAN DIEGO—For owner Christine Perez, the beginnings of Cafe Madeleine started with a history of trips to France “...to visit my husbands family. A simple crepe on the streets of Paris, was an experience in French fast food. From these experiences, to our home kitchen in South Park, and finally to Cafe Madeleine.”

Cafe Madeleine (2248 30th St. @Juniper / 619.544.1735), opened its doors on the cusp of two hip San Diego urban neighborhoods--South Park and North Park--on May 31, 2010.  One look at CM's old bungalow style apartment building storefront that was converted into a cozy cafe and you will see the similarities with those classic sidewalk cafes in Paris and Europe.

It’s not a coffee house, but it is a house and they do serve coffee.  They’re proud of the Parisian menu of crepes and other French specialties and they take pride in having created a culture of community, authentic French food and as they boast "The Worlds Finest Cup of Coffee" together.

Says Christine, “Once you have tasted illy, you'll understand why it's the #1 choice of celebrated chefs and coffee connoisseurs. Cup after cup illy provides the same consistant and distinctive taste. That's because the illy family has been perfecting espresso coffee in Trieste, Italy since 1933. The result? An unforgettable experience you'll want to enjoy again and again.”

Another ingredient of Café Madeleine’s success is ambience.  “We have worked hard to serve consistent high quality French street food in a architectural ambiance of a Parisian cafe.”

Decor touches gracefully add to the ambience of Cafe Madeleline
Café Madeleine oozes Art Nouveau from its sidewalk chairs, crimson umbrellas lining the sidewalk to the mural of Toulouse-Lautrec-like decorative painting on the Juniper Street side of the building done by Alexandra Pastorino, a French artist now living in Los Angeles.

Perez is creating a second location for Café Madeleine at El Cajon Boulevard and Utah Streets in North North Park.  Residents are looking forward to a nice looking cafe there in what has been a very drab intersection.
