TEA ROOM ON THE ROAD LESS TRAVELED

OASIS OFF THE INTERSTATE--Traveling along Interstate 40 in MidAmerica there are stretches that can be called scenic challenged.  But, I-40 used to be U.S. Highway 66 that in a bygone area was the only roadway connecting small towns from Chicago to Los Angeles.  These old towns—like pearls on a vintage necklace--still provide a much-needed respite for cross country drivers.

For no reason other than curiosity we pulled off the Interstate and into Elk City, Oklahoma’s Main Street (Business route 66).

And, like Forrest Gump’s box of chocolates one never knows what treasures await.

About midway through town we drove by an oasis.  “Did you see that house?  It was a tea room.”

Quickly turning a U, we pulled into the parking lot of Country Dove Gifts & Tea Room.

Country Dove is a triptych of activity.  Owned by two hardworking women Glenna Hollis and Kay Farmer the enterprise features tea room/restaurant; a gift store featuring among other items, a variety of Christian-faith merchandise and an upstairs/downstairs Antique Store serving collectors of all denominations.

For late lunch, we ordered from a wide-selections of tea and opted for slices of the “specialty dessert of the house,” homemade French-style silk pie.  I would have licked the pie plate clean if I were dining solo.

Other guests were raving about the squares of creamy yellow jello and an avocado, chicken sandwich on a croissant.

After wards, we spent a delightful hour in the Antique store.  We would have stayed longer but a midsummer story was heading our way and we were determined to make Amarillo before it poured.
